Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has explained how the players have adapted to the demanding coaching style of head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, insisting that the Moroccan tactician’s high expectations and public criticism are helping the squad improve.
Sibisi shared his thoughts ahead of the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs, following questions about Ouaddou’s approach to managing the Pirates players and his uncompromising demands for better performances.
The discussion comes after Ouaddou openly criticised his players despite their convincing 3-0 victory over Milford FC in the Carling Knockout Cup. The coach expressed disappointment with the team’s finishing, pointing out that they had created 24 scoring opportunities but managed to convert only three into goals.
Ouaddou questioned why his players should settle for three goals when they had enough opportunities to score more, insisting that a club of Orlando Pirates’ stature should always strive for excellence.
However, Sibisi has defended his coach, explaining that his comments should not be interpreted as dissatisfaction with the players but rather as an indication of the standards he expects at the club.
According to the Pirates captain, the players have accepted the coach’s demands positively, and there is no frustration within the dressing room over his criticism.
Speaking ahead of the Soweto Derby, Sibisi said:
“Look, I think the coach has been misinterpreted, if I can say, because he demands excellence. Good is not enough. And for a club like Pirates, excellence always has to prevail.
“I think for the boys, they’re taking it in a positive manner. There’s no one sulking about it. We know we should have scored more goals, that we know ourselves.”
Sibisi further explained that Ouaddou wants the team to maintain its attacking intensity instead of becoming comfortable after establishing a comfortable lead.
He believes the coach’s mentality is important because goal difference could eventually play a significant role in determining the Betway Premiership title race.
The Pirates captain also acknowledged that the squad has young players who enjoy expressing themselves on the pitch but explained that the team must first fulfil its responsibilities before focusing on individual flair.
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates are preparing to face Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby, with Sibisi and his teammates hoping to meet their coach’s expectations and secure an important result.
