South African media personality Minnie Dlamini has once again found herself at the centre of social media discussions after an old tweet about French football legend Thierry Henry resurfaced online.
The decade-old post began circulating again following Henry’s high-profile appearance at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Saturday, 31 October 2026, where he delivered the official match ball ahead of the highly anticipated Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
As photographs and videos of the former Arsenal striker at the stadium spread across social media, users revisited Dlamini’s 2017 post, which had attracted considerable attention when she first shared it.
The tweet dates back to shortly after Dlamini married her now ex-husband, Quinton Jones, in 2017.
At the time, the television presenter reacted to news that Henry had arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa. She jokingly expressed disappointment that she would not get the opportunity to meet the football icon because she had recently tied the knot.
In the post, Dlamini wrote:
“Today marks the day of my devastation! Thierry Henry is in Johannesburg, South Africa (my hood) and I just got married... #Heartbroken.”
Although the comment appeared to be a playful expression of admiration for the football star, it attracted mixed reactions when it was initially published.
Some social media users questioned why a newly married woman would publicly describe herself as heartbroken over missing an opportunity to meet another man.
Others, however, understood the remark as harmless celebrity humour and argued that there was no reason to interpret it as a reflection of her commitment to her marriage.
Henry’s appearance at the Soweto Derby provided social media users with another opportunity to discuss the old post.
The former France international made a notable appearance at the packed FNB Stadium, where he delivered the official match ball before the clash between the two Soweto rivals.
His presence generated excitement among football supporters, particularly those who grew up watching him during his successful playing career.
Henry is widely celebrated for his achievements with Arsenal, where he became one of the club’s most recognisable players. He also enjoyed success with Barcelona and represented France at major international tournaments.
However, alongside the excitement surrounding his visit, Dlamini’s old tweet became a talking point, with some users questioning the timing of her original comment.
The resurfaced tweet has produced different opinions, with some people criticising Dlamini while others have defended her.
Those questioning the post argued that publicly declaring herself heartbroken because of a celebrity visit was inappropriate shortly after getting married.
Some also brought up her eventual separation from Jones, suggesting that the old comment now attracts even more attention because the marriage did not last.
However, others believe the renewed criticism is unnecessary. They argued that celebrities can have harmless crushes and admire international stars without it meaning anything serious about their relationships.
Supporters also questioned why a joke made nearly a decade ago should continue to attract controversy, especially when its original context was light-hearted.
For them, the renewed discussion reflects how social media preserves old posts and allows them to resurface whenever a public figure or event becomes relevant.
Dlamini’s personal life has frequently attracted public interest, particularly her past marriage to Jones and her previous relationship with former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.
In an earlier discussion about her relationship history, the media personality revealed that a mutual acquaintance helped bring her and Khune together. She also indicated that she was already familiar with the footballer before their relationship began.
While the latest online debate centres on a playful remark about Henry, it has once again placed Dlamini’s romantic history under public scrutiny.
Nearly ten years after the original tweet, the conversation demonstrates how quickly an old social media post can return to the spotlight when circumstances bring it back into public attention.
