Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson inspired Aston Villa to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Saturday, October 24, handing the Premier League champions their first league defeat of the season.
Jackson scored twice at Villa Park to end Manchester City’s perfect start after seven consecutive victories. His performance proved decisive as Villa took advantage of defensive errors to secure all three points against Enzo Maresca’s side.
The hosts made a strong start and took the lead in the sixth minute when Jackson capitalised on a mistake by Manchester City defender Marc Guehi. John McGinn helped create the opportunity, allowing the Senegal international to move into the penalty area before firing past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Manchester City responded by increasing the pressure and creating several opportunities to equalise. However, Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced a series of impressive saves to frustrate the visitors, while Iliman Ndiaye also struck the post during the first half.
City eventually found a breakthrough shortly after the interval. In the 52nd minute, Erling Haaland rose to meet Ndiaye’s cross and headed the ball into the net, bringing the visitors level and giving them renewed hope of extending their winning run.
The equaliser briefly shifted the momentum in City’s favour, with Josko Gvardiol coming close to scoring before Suzuki tipped his effort onto the crossbar.
Villa, however, regained the advantage in the 60th minute. Jackson completed his brace after receiving a pass from substitute Ibrahim Mbaye, sending a low effort towards goal that slipped underneath Donnarumma.
Manchester City pushed for another equaliser during the closing stages, but Villa defended resolutely to protect their lead. Haaland had a late opportunity, only for Ian Maatsen to clear his effort off the goal line.
The result ended City’s seven-match winning streak and marked a significant victory for Unai Emery’s team. Jackson’s two goals also strengthened his growing reputation as one of Villa’s key attacking players this season.
