Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has announced his preliminary 38-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Kenya next month.
South Africa are scheduled to face Benni McCarthy’s side twice as they continue their qualifying campaign. Mosimane will be hoping to maintain his strong start as national team coach after recording positive results in his first matches in charge.
Bafana began with a 2-1 victory over Guinea before producing an impressive 5-0 win against Eritrea. They also secured a 1-0 victory in a friendly match in Egypt, giving Mosimane further encouragement as he continues to assess his options ahead of the upcoming international fixtures.
The results have provided a positive foundation for the coach, who will now be looking to build on the team’s recent performances when they meet Kenya. However, the two matches are expected to provide a different challenge, with South Africa needing to remain consistent and make the most of their opportunities.
One of the notable inclusions in the preliminary squad is Aden McCarthy, who has impressed with his performances for Sabah FK. The defender has attracted attention through his displays for the Malaysian club, including his involvement in the UEFA Champions League.
Boitumelo Radiopane has also earned a place in the initial selection after his performances at club level. His inclusion gives Mosimane another attacking option to consider as he prepares for the two important matches.
Meanwhile, Luke Le Roux and Mbekezeli Mbokazi have returned to the 38-man squad. Their inclusion provides the coach with additional choices as he evaluates the players available for the upcoming qualifiers.
Although the preliminary selection includes 38 players, not everyone will make the final squad. Mosimane will have to reduce the number of players before confirming the group that will represent South Africa against Kenya.
The final selection will be important as Bafana Bafana look to continue their positive run and strengthen their position in the qualifying campaign. With two matches against Kenya coming up, Mosimane will want a balanced squad capable of competing in both fixtures.
The coach will also be looking for his selected players to maintain the standards shown in the recent victories and carry that confidence into the next international break.
