Peter Shalulile was on the scoresheet once again as Young Africans came from behind to beat Mashujaa SC 2-1 in their first match since the departure of head coach Manqoba Mngqithi.
Yanga fell a goal behind after just 17 minutes and were forced to work much harder than expected to collect the three points at home.
The home side did not have to wait long for a response. Only five minutes after going down, Shalulile struck the equaliser, which levelled the scores and settled the nerves of the Yanga supporters and players alike.
Stephane Aziz Ki provided the assist for the goal, setting up Shalulile to score. Both teams went into the half-time break on level terms, with everything still to play for in the second half.
Yanga eventually found the winning goal in the 79th minute, when Clement Mzizi put the home side in front. They held on to their lead for the rest of the match and secured a valuable victory.
The result means Yanga have cut the gap to their bitter rivals and log leaders Simba SC to just two points, and they also have a game in hand, which keeps the title race wide open.
Mngqithi's former assistant, Simo Dladla, was in charge of the team for the match. The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows head coach was sacked over the weekend, and Dladla took over the dugout for this important fixture.
For Shalulile, it was another timely contribution in front of goal, and the result will give the squad a welcome boost of confidence as they try to keep up the pressure on Simba SC in the weeks ahead.
