Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi has praised his players after the Angolan club eliminated reigning CAF Champions League champions Mamelodi Sundowns, securing a historic place in the competition’s group stage.
Wiliete held Sundowns to a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night, progressing on the away-goals rule after the first leg in Angola ended goalless. The achievement marks the first time the club has reached the Champions League group stage.
Speaking after the match, Bianchi highlighted the significance of defeating such a respected opponent on its home ground.
“I want to congratulate my players, it’s not everyday you beat Mamelodi in their home turf,” the coach said.
The Brazilian coach explained that his team understood the challenge of facing Sundowns in Pretoria and prepared to withstand the pressure expected from the South African giants. Wiliete focused on maintaining a compact defensive shape, limiting space and taking advantage of opportunities when they appeared.
“It was evident they would dominate possession at home. When it comes to defending in a low block, we did very well,” Bianchi added.
Sundowns made the stronger start, with Tashreeq Matthews opening the scoring in the 11th minute. The goal gave the hosts hope of progressing, but Wiliete responded shortly after the break when Angola international striker Mabululu equalised in the 48th minute.
The visitors then concentrated on protecting their advantage, frustrating Sundowns despite sustained attacking pressure. The Pretoria side registered 18 shots compared with Wiliete’s six, but could not find the additional goal needed to save their title defence.
Bianchi acknowledged that Sundowns created several opportunities but praised his players for remaining disciplined throughout the encounter.
“They had many opportunities, goal-scoring opportunities, but this is football – we just take the one shot we did and we are qualified now, that’s the most important thing for us,” he said.
For Wiliete, the result represents a major milestone in the club’s development. Founded in 2018, the Angolan side has now earned a place among Africa’s leading clubs in the Champions League group stage.
Sundowns, meanwhile, must reassess their campaign after failing to reach the group stage for the first time in 11 seasons. Their early elimination brings their title defence to an unexpected end.
Bianchi and his players will now prepare for the next stage, hoping to carry their defensive discipline and confidence into the group-stage matches.
