Teko Modise Sends Strong Message to Sundowns New Signing Thabang Matuludi in Battle for Right-Back Spot

Former Bafana Bafana star Teko Modise has offered valuable advice to Mamelodi Sundowns' new signing Thabang Matuludi, urging the defender to make life difficult for his competitors as he looks to establish himself at one of South African football's biggest clubs.

Matuludi joined the Brazilians from Polokwane City in September 2026, strengthening their options at right-back following the long-term injury suffered by Khuliso Mudau. However, the 27-year-old faces a demanding challenge as he competes for a regular place in coach Miguel Cardoso's starting line-up. <Cite refs={["turn147967search7","turn147967search3"]}/>

Modise's advice comes at a time when Sundowns are managing a crowded right-back department, with several experienced players fighting for opportunities. While Mudau remains sidelined, Matuludi has an important opportunity to demonstrate his quality and convince the technical team that he deserves to be trusted in crucial matches.

The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder understands the pressure that comes with representing a club where expectations are consistently high. At Chloorkop, signing for the team is only the beginning; players must maintain their standards and deliver performances that justify their selection.

For Matuludi, the challenge is not simply to take advantage of Mudau's absence but to establish himself as a dependable option even when the Bafana Bafana international eventually returns to full fitness.

Mudau suffered a serious Achilles injury in August, with Sundowns coach Cardoso indicating that the defender would be out for an extended period. His absence has created an opening that Matuludi will be eager to exploit. <Cite refs={["turn147967search1","turn147967search7"]}/>

Nevertheless, competition at Sundowns extends beyond one player. Thapelo Morena, Zuko Mdunyelwa and Deano van Rooyen are among the defenders who provide additional options in the position, making consistency and versatility essential qualities for anyone hoping to secure regular minutes. <Cite refs={["turn147967search3","turn147967search7"]}/>

Matuludi has already shown that he can compete at a high level. His experience with Polokwane City and involvement with Bafana Bafana have helped prepare him for the demands of playing for a club competing for domestic honours and continental success.

His move to Sundowns also represents an opportunity to strengthen his international ambitions. Regular performances at club level could help him remain in contention for future national team selections, particularly while Mudau continues his recovery.

Ultimately, Modise's message highlights an important reality of professional football: players must earn their places through hard work, discipline and consistent performances.

For Matuludi, the mission is clear. He must make the most of every opportunity, challenge his teammates for the starting position and prove that he can be more than temporary cover for an injured star.

If he succeeds, Sundowns could benefit from another reliable defensive option, while Matuludi could establish himself as a major figure in the club's plans for the future.
