De Sa Reveals When Showboating Should Be Allowed in Saturday’s Soweto Derby

Former South African footballer De Sa has shared his views on showboating ahead of Saturday’s Soweto Derby, explaining why players should be allowed to express themselves on the pitch when their team is performing well.

The highly anticipated clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is expected to attract significant attention, with supporters eager to see which side will claim bragging rights in one of South African football’s biggest rivalries. Beyond the result, individual performances, technical ability and moments of skill could also become talking points.

De Sa believes showboating should not automatically be condemned, particularly when a team is comfortably ahead and its players are confident in their performance. However, he suggested that such displays should be supported by the scoreline rather than used unnecessarily when a match remains closely contested.

Reflecting on his own experience of the famous rivalry, De Sa explained that he understood the intensity surrounding major Soweto derbies and the importance of entertaining supporters.

"I played a Soweto Derby myself. A Swallows v Pirates match was massive in my time. You only do showboating if you are winning, and you are winning convincingly."

His comments highlight the connection between confidence, entertainment and winning football. In a high-pressure encounter, players often face criticism when their skills appear intended to embarrass opponents rather than contribute to the team's performance. Nevertheless, De Sa's position suggests that supporters should be prepared to appreciate moments of flair when the team displaying them has established a comfortable advantage.

The Soweto Derby provides an ideal setting for such discussions because of the intense competition between the two clubs. Both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have passionate fan bases, and every encounter carries enormous expectations. Players are therefore required to balance creativity with discipline while remaining focused on securing a positive result.

Showboating can bring excitement to a match, especially when talented players use their technical ability to beat opponents and create scoring opportunities. However, attempting unnecessary tricks when the result is uncertain can also invite criticism and potentially give the opposition an opportunity to regain control.

As Saturday's showdown approaches, De Sa's remarks offer an interesting perspective on how footballers should approach entertainment during important matches. His message is that flair has its place in the game, but winning convincingly should provide the foundation for players to express themselves without facing unnecessary criticism.
