Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Sergio Dos Santos has expressed his dissatisfaction with the officiating during Saturday's Soweto Derby, raising concerns about some of the decisions made by the match officials. His reaction has added to the discussions surrounding the highly anticipated encounter between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
Dos Santos, who previously occupied the coaching position at Chiefs, was particularly unhappy with how the refereeing team managed certain moments during the contest. Although he acknowledged the importance of respecting match officials, his comments suggested that he was not entirely convinced by the standard of officiating displayed during the derby.
The former coach made his position clear when discussing the referee's influence on the outcome of the match. However, he was careful not to place the entire responsibility for the result on the officials. He stated, "I'm not gonna say the referee decided the game", indicating that while he had reservations about the officiating, he did not believe it would be fair to suggest that the referee alone determined the outcome.
His remarks have attracted attention because the Soweto Derby is one of the biggest fixtures in South African football. Matches between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates often generate intense emotions among supporters, players and former football figures, particularly when controversial decisions become part of the post-match discussion.
For both clubs, the derby carries significant importance beyond the three points at stake. The rivalry between the two Soweto giants has a long history, making every encounter an opportunity for bragging rights and an opportunity to strengthen their position in South African football.
Dos Santos' reaction highlights the importance of consistent and effective refereeing in matches of such magnitude. Supporters expect match officials to make accurate decisions, maintain control of the game and ensure that both teams receive fair treatment throughout the contest.
Although he stopped short of accusing the referee of determining the result, his criticism has contributed to the growing debate about the officiating standards witnessed during the encounter.
