Benson Mhlongo Launches Community Project to Change Lives

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Benson Mhlongo has launched an ambitious new initiative aimed at transforming the lives of retired professional footballers while creating development opportunities for young South Africans.

The former Bafana Bafana international has introduced a project called Sports Legends Live, which seeks to provide employment opportunities for former professional players and establish programmes focused on youth development and community empowerment.

Mhlongo believes that footballers who have spent years competing at the highest level have valuable experience and knowledge that should continue benefiting society long after their playing careers come to an end.

For many retired footballers, life after professional football can be challenging, particularly when it comes to finding alternative employment and adjusting to life outside the game. Through his latest venture, Mhlongo hopes to create opportunities that will allow former players to remain involved in football while making meaningful contributions to their communities.

Speaking to KickOff, Mhlongo explained that his vision goes beyond establishing a business, as he wants to create sustainable opportunities for former professionals and invest in the next generation.

"I'm building my company, Sports Legends Live, where I'm trying to find work for ex-pros. Programmes to help and plough back into the development of young kids," Mhlongo said.

The former defender also emphasised that retired footballers possess valuable life lessons that can help guide young people through different challenges.

"Their experience is like a professor at university. They have a huge role to play in the community — guiding young men and women to navigate life," he added.

Mhlongo's initiative recognises the importance of mentorship, discipline and guidance in developing young people, particularly those from disadvantaged communities.

Beyond creating employment for retired players, Sports Legends Live could become an important platform for transferring football knowledge and life experience to future generations.

The project represents another opportunity for Mhlongo to contribute to South African football, demonstrating that former professionals can continue making a difference long after hanging up their boots.
