Bafana Fans Receive Mbokazi Update Ahead of AFCON Qualifiers Against Kenya

Mbekezeli Mbokazi is back in contention for Bafana Bafana as head coach Pitso Mosimane prepares his squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Kenya.

The defender’s potential return is a boost for South Africa, which will face the Harambee Stars in a two-legged qualifying tie in November. Mbokazi missed the previous international window after suffering a thigh injury that kept him out of action for several weeks.

The Chicago Fire centre-back has since returned to competitive football, giving Mosimane another option as he considers his defensive combinations for the important fixtures.

Mbokazi was one of South Africa’s standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, playing a key role in the team’s campaign. His absence from Mosimane’s first squad therefore attracted attention, particularly as the coach began building his team for the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.

According to reports ahead of the November matches, Mbokazi is expected to be available for consideration after making his return to club action. His fitness and match sharpness will be important factors as the national team prepares for the Kenya double-header.

South Africa will host Kenya on 13 November before travelling to Nairobi for the return fixture on 17 November. The matches form part of Bafana Bafana’s ongoing campaign to qualify for the continental tournament.

Mosimane now has several centre-back options to assess, including Ime Okon, Olwethu Makhanya and other defenders who featured in recent selections. Mbokazi’s return would add further competition for places and give the coach more flexibility when deciding on his starting line-up.

The defender’s inclusion in a preliminary squad, however, would not automatically guarantee him a place in the final team. His availability and physical condition will need to be assessed before the coach settles on his selection.

For Bafana supporters, the prospect of seeing Mbokazi return to the national side will be welcome news as South Africa prepares for a demanding pair of fixtures against Kenya.
