Kaizer Chiefs are mourning the death of Zambian football legend Freddy Mwila, who passed away in 2026 at the age of 80, bringing an end to an illustrious career that left a lasting impact on African and international football.
The Soweto giants expressed their sadness following the passing of the former Zambian international, describing his death as a significant loss to the football community. Mwila remains an important figure in Zambia's sporting history, having represented his country with distinction and contributed to the growth of football across the continent.
Mwila also shared a special historical connection with Kaizer Chiefs chairman, Dr Kaizer Motaung. The two football personalities played alongside each other for Atlanta Chiefs in the United States during the early years of the North American Soccer League (NASL).
Their partnership reached its greatest moment in 1968 when Atlanta Chiefs secured the NASL championship title. The achievement became an important milestone in their respective careers and established a lasting connection between the Zambian football icon and the man who would later build one of South Africa's most successful football clubs.
For Kaizer Chiefs, Mwila's passing represents more than the loss of a respected football figure. His career was closely connected to the club's chairman and forms part of the historical journey behind the establishment and growth of Amakhosi.
The club's tribute reflected on the special relationship between Mwila and Motaung, highlighting their shared success in the United States and the memories they created during their time together at Atlanta Chiefs.
Beyond his achievements in club football, Mwila belonged to a generation of Zambian players who helped establish the country's reputation as an important football nation in Africa. His contribution to the sport will remain part of Zambia's football heritage and serve as an inspiration to upcoming generations.
Kaizer Chiefs have extended their heartfelt condolences to Mwila's family, friends and the entire Zambian football fraternity.
Although his passing marks the end of an era, his achievements and contribution to football will continue to be remembered.
