Kadodia Calls on SAFA to Step Up as Durban City Make Their Mark in Africa

Kadodia Urges SAFA to Enhance Support as Durban City Makes Progress in Africa

Farook Kadodia, the chairman of Durban City, is calling on the South African Football Association (SAFA) to provide increased support as his team faces the challenges of competing in African football.

Kadodia asserts that South African clubs need more assistance from the national football governing body when they represent the country in continental competitions. His comments shed light on the financial and logistical burdens that clubs encounter while organizing international matches alongside their domestic commitments.

Durban City's involvement in continental football is a significant achievement for the club, offering opportunities to expand its reach beyond South Africa. However, this endeavor also highlights the hurdles clubs face in preparing for CAF-sanctioned matches.

Kadodia pointed out the support provided by football associations in other African nations, suggesting that South African clubs could benefit from a similar level of assistance. "The teams we've encountered in Burundi and Mauritius have their FA supporting them in hosting matches. Here, we have to manage everything on our own," he remarked.

His statements raise concerns about the extent of institutional support available to South African clubs competing internationally. The costs associated with hosting CAF matches—such as stadium readiness, security, transportation, and lodging—can be substantial.

For clubs lacking the financial backing of South Africa's leading football entities, these challenges can increase pressure, particularly as they strive to remain competitive on the field.

Kadodia warned that the current situation might deter smaller clubs from pursuing success in Africa, especially when the financial strain of continental play conflicts with their domestic obligations.

He also highlighted the significant responsibility of representing both KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa on the continental stage. Despite the obstacles, Durban City is determined to seize their chance and compete with honor. "It’s a significant responsibility. We are representing KZN and our country," Kadodia explained.

These concerns arise as the Citizens mark an important time in their inaugural continental campaign. After winning the Nedbank Cup for the 2025/26 season, the club qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Under head coach Eric Tinkler, Durban City has reached the group stages after overcoming Mauritian team AS Port Louis 2000 with a convincing 6-1 aggregate score, winning both legs with scores of 3-1 and 3-0, thanks to goals from Gaston Sirino, Haashim Domingo, and Ethan Brooks.

This achievement is a significant milestone for a club still establishing itself in South Africa's top tier. However, Kadodia hopes this progress will spark meaningful discussions regarding enhanced support for local clubs competing internationally.

He also acknowledged the balancing act of managing continental play alongside domestic duties, particularly as important matches arise quickly.

Following their trip to Mauritius, Durban City is set to play Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout on October 28, further straining the squad.

For Kadodia, ensuring that South African clubs are not left to shoulder the financial responsibility of representing their country alone is a priority. He believes that appropriate SAFA support could enable teams to prepare more effectively, maintain competitiveness, and improve their chances of advancement in African competitions.

Durban City's historic qualification has already sparked excitement among their fans. Now, Kadodia is hopeful that their success will prompt SAFA to reevaluate its support strategies for clubs competing on the continent.
