Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela has reportedly taken charge of a training session at the club’s Kloorkop training facility while head coach Miguel Cardoso’s future remains uncertain following the team’s early elimination from the CAF Champions League.
According to unconfirmed reports, Komphela oversaw preparations as the Tshwane-based club continued its build-up to the upcoming Carling Knockout Cup encounter against Marumo Gallants.
His reported involvement in training has raised questions among supporters about Cardoso’s position at the club. However, there has been no official confirmation that the Portuguese tactician has been suspended, dismissed or relieved of his responsibilities.
Further reports suggest that Sundowns management held an emergency meeting with Cardoso to discuss the team’s recent performances and determine the way forward after their disappointing Champions League campaign. The details of the alleged meeting, however, have not been officially confirmed.
The situation comes at a challenging period for the reigning South African football heavyweights, who are expected to concentrate on domestic competitions as they attempt to recover from their continental setback.
Sundowns have established themselves as one of South Africa’s most successful clubs, with a strong record in domestic competitions and regular participation in major African tournaments. Their early Champions League exit has consequently increased scrutiny of the team’s performances and the direction of the technical team.
Komphela brings considerable experience to the coaching setup, having worked with several clubs in South African football. His reported role in overseeing training could help maintain continuity as the team prepares for its next competitive fixture.
Nevertheless, his presence in charge of the session does not necessarily mean that Sundowns are planning to replace Cardoso. There could be other explanations for the head coach’s reported absence, although the circumstances have yet to be clarified.
For now, questions surrounding Cardoso’s situation and the alleged meeting with club management remain unanswered. Sundowns have not announced any changes to their technical team.
Supporters will be awaiting an official statement as the club prepares for its Carling Knockout Cup clash against Marumo Gallants, with attention likely to remain on both the team’s performance and the uncertainty surrounding its coaching arrangements.
