With Khuliso Mudau out of action due to injury, former Bafana Bafana star Teko Modise gave new signing Thabang Matuludi some advice regarding the competition at the right back position.
On September 11, Matuludi signed a lucrative three-year contract to complete his high profile transfer to the Brazilians.
The 27 year old defender has excelled under head coach Miguel Cardoso since switching, making two official appearances, contributing one assist, and quickly accumulating zero trophies while the team ongoing domestic and continental campaigns are still in progress.
Coach Cardoso chose the highly regarded fullback to start ahead of Sundowns other right backs, Deano van Rooyen, Zuko Mdunyelwa, and Thapelo Morena.
Matuludi is still regarded as the second choice behind Bafana Bafana star Khuliso Mudau despite his outstanding early contributions, and Mdunyelwa is thought to be the second choice behind Mudau in the club overall hierarchy when fit.
Due to a serious medical emergency, the intense competition for right back positions has temporarily subsided.
Mudau was sidelined for a long time after suffering a total rupture of his Achilles tendon on August 19, 2026, against Marumo Gallants. In about six months, in March 2027, he is anticipated to return.
Cardoso selection problems were made worse by the injury sustained by Mdunyelwa, his direct opponent.Matuludi has been advised by Modise to seize every chance.
On the 2 Touch Podcast, Modise said, "We always knew that Matuludi is one of the best right backs in the country, and for me, I have always felt that sometimes as a good player, you just need other good players around you."
"He needed a powerful group. In less than a month, he won two trophies, and Iam positive it had nothing to do with the script he wrote. He never thought that would happen.
"After experiencing glory as quickly as possible, Iam sure he wants more. I know he is aware of how tough the competition is given the role he plays, so he should make the right back position his own now and make sure it is a fiercely competitive area when Mudau returns.
"A former coach of ours told us to stay here if you wanted trophies," he went on.With Mudau nearing a long term recovery and the other right back contingent fully recovered.
Coach Cardoso will have to make a difficult decision when his star studded roster is fully available for the upcoming season.
Because of the enormous quality stacked in that specific department, the Portuguese tactician faces a major selection headache.
Matuludi must continue his excellent work if he is to live up to Modise high standards and hold onto his position before the established hierarchy recovers.
