Despite winning the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup by a score of 1-0, Kaizer Chiefs were eliminated from the competition after suffering a loss to Red Arrows in a penalty shootout at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday. The loss resulted in a 3-2 loss for Red Arrows. Amakhosi came into the match with the objective of overcoming a 1-0 deficit from the first leg, which took place in Ndola, Zambia. Bradley Cross scored the crucial goal that brought the overall score to 1-1. However, the Soweto giants were unable to complete their comeback during the penalty shootout, which resulted in the Zambian team being able to move on to the next round.
The team led by Fernando Da Cruz began with an aggressive mindset, with the goal of scoring as soon as possible and exerting competitive pressure on their rivals. Their first significant opportunity came in the eleventh minute, when Thulani Mabaso tested Red Arrows goalkeeper Charles Kalumba, who made a crucial save. This was their first significant window of opportunity.
Chiefs continued their search for a breakthrough, but they were unable to successfully overcome the organized defense of Red Arrows. In addition, Pule Mmodi came close to scoring in the second half, but Kalumba was able to prevent him from scoring in the 62nd minute. When Cross headed the ball into the net in the 66th minute, it was finally the breakthrough that the home fans had been waiting for. This gave them hope. In the subsequent moments, Chiefs created opportunities to secure qualification; however, Shabalala was unable to convert two promising chances.
Because neither team was able to score another goal, the match was decided by penalties, and the Red Arrows prevailed with a score of 3-2 by maintaining their composure.
While this is going on, it has been reported that Da Cruz has voiced his dissatisfaction with the club's recruitment strategy. He has stated that the limited financial support for the club prevented him from bringing in players of his choosing. Reportedly, he also stated that management was responsible for putting together the current team. There has been no independent verification of these comments, nor has Kaizer Chiefs officially confirmed their authenticity.
A significant setback for Amakhosi, who must now focus on their domestic campaign while questions regarding squad depth, recruitment, and the team's progress under Da Cruz continue to emerge, the elimination represents a significant disappointment for the team.
