Newly appointed Golden Arrows head coach Mandla Ncikazi has shared the emotional and professional reasons behind his decision to return to the club, following a successful multi-year stint with Orlando Pirates. The experienced South African coach returns to the Durban-based team five years after leading them to a fourth-place finish in the domestic league, which remains the highest ranking achieved in the history of the club.
Reflecting on his career transition shortly after Golden Arrows suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against local rivals AmaZulu in the eThekwini Derby, Ncikazi expressed deep appreciation for his time with the Soweto giants. He noted that during his tenure at Orlando Pirates, he experienced significant success and earned valuable silverware, making him feel that it was time to step into a new phase of his managerial career. Rather than staying in a comfortable environment, he sought out the fresh challenge of developing younger talent and steering a rebuilding project.
Ncikazi acknowledged that Golden Arrows retains a special personal significance for him due to the historical milestones they achieved together during his previous tenure. When the opportunity arose to rejoin the club, his strong emotional connection and a desire to recreate past successes made the offer compelling.
However, the coach remains clear-eyed about the immediate tasks ahead. The recent defeat against AmaZulu highlighted significant operational issues, particularly a noticeable lack of sharp creativity in the final third and difficulty in scoring goals. Addressing these flaws is complicated by a crowded fixture schedule, which provides minimal recovery time between matches for structural tactical changes. Despite these tight timelines, Ncikazi remains focused on finding practical solutions. His immediate priority is to rebuild team confidence, restore sharp attacking form, and steadily guide Golden Arrows up the league standings.
