Barcelona Rejected R4.6 Billion PSG Offer for 17-Year-Old Lamine Yamal, Laporta Reveals
The Spanish giants' resoluteness to safeguard one of football's most prized young talents was on full display when they turned down a sensational €250 million (about R4.6 billion) bid from Paris Saint-Germain for teenage wonder Lamine Yamal.
According to Joan Laporta, a former president of Barcelona, the Catalan club rejected the massive offer when Yamal was just 17 years old, even though doing so would have had serious financial consequences for the club.
Lamine Yamal was just 17 years old when we turned down PSG's €250 million deal for him. Several others believed we were insane," Laporta reportedly said, as reported by journalists covering the sport.
The news shows that Barcelona sees Yamal as more than just a possible transfer cost and sheds light on the club's long-term goals.
When the offer was supposedly made, it was in 2024, when Yamal was quickly becoming one of the world's most promising young players. After playing a pivotal role in Spain's triumphant Euro 2024 campaign, his exceptional performances for both Barcelona and Spain garnered worldwide recognition.
Barcelona might have benefited much financially from accepting such a huge offer when they were facing serious financial difficulties. Nevertheless, the club decided to keep a player it saw as crucial to its future in order to focus on its sports goals.
The case for such choice has been bolstered by Yamal's quick growth. The winger has established himself as a key player in Barcelona's assault because to his remarkable blend of youth, poise, inventiveness, and dribbling prowess.
He has become one of the most famous young football players and his commercial worth has skyrocketed thanks to the parallels made to his performances by some of the sport's greatest names.
Following Kylian Mbappe's 2024 transfer to Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain reportedly sought to acquire top offensive talent. Having a lot of money does not ensure success when it comes to the transfer market, as Barcelona's reluctance showed.
Also, the rumoured €250 million offer would have been more than the €222 million that PSG paid Barcelona to get Neymar in 2017, which is still one of the most high-profile moves in football history.
Since then, Barcelona has taken further precautions to secure Yamal's future by signing a long-term deal with him, demonstrating their resolve to maintain him central to their sports endeavour.
The Barcelona faithful saw Laporta's confession as a declaration of ambition. The club went with a long-term investment on a player it thinks can contribute to huge trophy hauls instead of trying to cash in on a teenage sensation.
Barcelona has made it plain that Yamal is more than just another asset—he is an integral part of the club's future. Rejecting such an unprecedented offer was a huge bet, but the message has been sent.
