Back
Reportedly, Manchester United have fired head coach Michael Carrick effective immediately. Up until a permanent replacement is named, former player Darren Fletcher will presumably serve as caretaker coach of the first squad.
The alleged decision follows a string of poor results for Manchester United, which has put more strain on Carrick and caused many to question the team's ability to compete this year.
After United's 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth on October 25, 2026, Carrick's status was under heavy pressure. The club's problems were much more apparent after the setback, and demands for managerial changes became louder.
As a result of the loss, Manchester United dropped to 16th position in the Premier League, continuing a lengthy losing streak and infuriating fans.
Reportedly, after the Bournemouth defeat, the club's upper echelons discussed Carrick's future and whether or not a management change was needed to reverse the team's downturn.
Following Ruben Amorim's sacking in January of 2026, Carrick made his way back to Old Trafford. After leading United to a Premier League third-place finish last season, he was promoted to head coach.
Nevertheless, his status is under increasing scrutiny due to the team's disastrous record this season.
Scheduled for Caretaker Appointment: Darren Fletcher
While Manchester United look for a new permanent head coach, Darren Fletcher will supposedly take charge of the first team.
After Amorim left in January, Fletcher coached the senior squad for two games before Carrick was named.
Since retiring from playing, the former Scotland international has worked a number of positions at Manchester United, so he is well-acquainted with the club's locker room.
United would have an option in the meantime if he were to return to the bench while the club's management searches for a permanent manager.
Getting the squad back on track, winning more games, and winning back the faith of the players and fans is the top objective right now.
Manchester United Must Make Important Managerial Call
Manchester United have had trouble establishing continuity in recent seasons, and Carrick's projected exit would be another big management upheaval for the club.
The next step for the club's management is to find a replacement who can boost performance and get the squad back in the hunt for championship hardware.
The club's ultimate choice on a permanent appointment is something to keep an eye on, but a number of applicants have been associated with the position.
Until Manchester United choose a new head coach, Fletcher will likely serve in a caretaker capacity with the squad.
These events herald yet another tumultuous time at Old Trafford, where fans are praying for a leadership change that will propel the team beyond its dismal season opener.
