Orlando Pirates have been urged to give Sebastian Pedersen more playing time after former Buccaneers midfielder Sifiso Myeni questioned the club's treatment of the Norwegian striker.
Myeni believes the 27-year-old forward deserves a fair opportunity to prove himself under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, especially considering his goalscoring record before joining the Soweto giants.
Pedersen joined Orlando Pirates from Norwegian club Sogndal during the off-season on a two-year contract. However, he has struggled to secure regular playing time since arriving at the club, with his appearances limited despite the team's need for effective options in attack.
The striker reportedly scored 51 goals in 117 matches before making the move to South Africa, a record that raised expectations among Pirates supporters. His previous performances suggested that he could offer the Buccaneers another reliable option in front of goal.
However, Pedersen has yet to receive an extended opportunity to demonstrate his abilities in competitive matches. His situation has attracted attention, with some supporters questioning why the striker has not been given more minutes to show what he can contribute to the team.
Speaking on Omni Audio Africa, Myeni called on Ouaddou to give Pedersen the same opportunities afforded to the club's other forwards.
According to Myeni, players such as Evidence Makgopa, Boitumelo Radiopane and Yanela Mbuthuma have been given opportunities to feature, while Pedersen has had limited involvement.
He argued that the Norwegian should also be allowed to play regularly so that supporters and the coaching staff can properly assess his qualities.
Myeni's comments reflect a growing debate about squad selection at Orlando Pirates. While competition for places is expected at a club of their size, questions can arise when a new signing struggles to get enough minutes to prove his value.
However, Pedersen's limited involvement does not necessarily mean that the coaching staff have lost confidence in him. Ouaddou previously indicated that the striker needed time to improve his fitness and adapt to his new surroundings.
Moving to a different country and adjusting to a new league can take time, particularly for a player who must understand a new tactical system and develop an understanding with his teammates.
Nevertheless, Myeni believes the striker deserves a genuine opportunity rather than being restricted to brief appearances.
Giving Pedersen more minutes could help the coaching staff determine whether he can become an important part of the team's attacking plans. It would also allow the striker to build confidence and demonstrate the finishing ability that made him an attractive signing.
For now, the debate continues as Pirates supporters wait to see whether Ouaddou will give the Norwegian forward a bigger role in the coming matches.
Do you agree with Sifiso Myeni? Should Orlando Pirates give Sebastian Pedersen more playing time?
