Kaizer Chiefs new signing Elias Mokwana has opened up about his long-awaited move to Naturena, revealing that he was close to joining the Soweto giants before deciding to continue his career abroad with Esperance Sportive de Tunis. The 27-year-old winger has described his arrival at Amakhosi as a dream come true, having supported the club since childhood.
Mokwana was officially unveiled as a new Chiefs player this week after mutually parting ways with Tunisian giants Esperance earlier this year. He joins the club as a free agent and will now be looking to make an important contribution as Amakhosi continue their efforts to return to the top of South African football.
The former Sekhukhune United attacker has already experienced playing in the Betway Premiership and representing Bafana Bafana. However, his latest move has a special meaning because it gives him the opportunity to represent the team he grew up supporting.
Speaking to the Chiefs media team after his unveiling, Mokwana revealed that Amakhosi had previously shown interest in signing him while he was still playing for Sekhukhune United. At the time, he believed that he would be making the move to Naturena instead of joining Esperance in Tunisia.
However, certain obstacles prevented the transfer from happening, and he eventually moved abroad to continue his football career.
Mokwana explained that joining Chiefs was something he had wanted for a long time, making his latest transfer particularly special.
"I grew up supporting Amakhosi. I first heard that they were interested in me when I was at Sekhukhune. Instead of going to Esperance, I was supposed to come here, but unfortunately some obstacles prevented it from happening at the time," Mokwana said.
The winger also made it clear that he is not joining Chiefs simply because he has always supported the club. He wants to prove himself on the pitch and help the team achieve its ambitions.
Chiefs have been working towards building a competitive squad capable of challenging for major honours, and Mokwana will be hoping to become an important part of those plans. His experience in South African football and his time abroad could give the club another option in attack.
"For me, it is a dream come true. I have always wanted to prove myself in this team and to play a part in bringing some trophies to the club," he added.
Mokwana also revealed how he received the news about his move to Naturena and the first person he contacted after learning that he would finally become a Chiefs player.
The 27-year-old was spending time with his sisters when he decided to phone his mother and share the news. It was an emotional moment for him because of the importance of the opportunity and his long-standing connection with the club.
"I was sitting with my sisters, and the first thing I did was phone my mother to share the good news with her," he explained.
The former Bafana winger admitted that he struggled to find the right words to describe his emotions after completing the move. However, he made it clear that he was excited about joining the club and beginning a new chapter in his career.
"I can't explain the feeling exactly. I'm excited. It's a very nice feeling. This is a good place with good people, and I am very happy to be here," he said.
Mokwana's arrival will give Chiefs supporters another player to look forward to as the club continues its campaign. The winger will now have to turn his excitement into performances and show that he can make a difference in the team's attacking department.
Having previously missed the opportunity to join Amakhosi while at Sekhukhune, Mokwana finally has the chance to fulfil his ambition. His immediate challenge will be to establish himself at Naturena, help the club compete for trophies and reward the supporters who will be expecting a lot from their new signing.
