Kaizer Chiefs forward Wandile Duba has responded to TS Galaxy after helping his side to a 3-0 win in the Carling Knockout Cup at FNB Stadium, ending weeks of pre-match banter from their opponents.
The 22-year-old was the star of the night, scoring a brilliant hat-trick that carried Amakhosi past the Rockets and into the quarter-finals of the competition. His first goal came early in the second half, when he fired home from close range after a neat setup by Pule Mmodi. He then pounced on the rebound after Galaxy goalkeeper Melusi Mathebula saved a penalty, and completed his treble in the 65th minute.
Speaking to SuperSport TV after the match, Duba admitted that silencing the opposition was a big source of motivation for him and his teammates. He said Galaxy had disrespected Chiefs a lot on social media over the past two weeks, and that the players knew they had to win the game. According to Duba, the visitors were nowhere to be seen once the action started on the pitch.
The result was a perfect answer to the taunts, and it showed the character of a Chiefs side that is hungry for success. Duba had missed a glaring chance in the first half, but he kept his composure and made up for it with three goals.
The Soweto giants now wait for the draw to find out who they will face in the next round as they chase more silverware. Chiefs last tasted trophy success in the 2024/25 season, and the supporters will be hoping this cup run can end that wait.
Before that, Chiefs turn their attention to a massive Betway Premiership Soweto Derby against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates, set for Saturday, 31 October, at FNB Stadium. With Duba in such fine form, the Chiefs faithful will be full of confidence heading into the big clash.
