Ronnie Kanalelo Explains How Mamelodi Sundowns' Champions League Exit Could Benefit Marumo Gallants

Marumo Gallants head coach Ronnie Kanalelo believes Mamelodi Sundowns' elimination from the CAF Champions League could have created an opportunity for his team, although he remains aware of the quality and strength of the South African giants.

Sundowns' departure from the continental competition has attracted attention, particularly because of the possible impact it could have on their domestic campaign. With fewer continental commitments, the Brazilians may now have an opportunity to concentrate more heavily on their remaining local competitions.

Kanalelo acknowledged that Sundowns' exit was an unfortunate development, but admitted that it could have worked in Gallants' favour under different circumstances. He suggested that the situation might have opened the door for his side to benefit from the changes in the competition.

Speaking about the development, the Marumo Gallants coach said: "Sundowns are very much sad... to be out of the Champions League, it could have been an advantage for us, but it could have been a different opportunity for them for winning this competition."

His assessment highlights the complicated situation created by Sundowns' elimination. While their absence from the Champions League represents a disappointment for the club and its supporters, it could also allow the team to redirect its attention towards domestic football.

However, Kanalelo was careful not to suggest that Sundowns' elimination had made them an easier opponent. The Pretoria-based side remains one of the strongest teams in South African football, with considerable experience, quality players and the resources to compete at the highest level.

For Marumo Gallants, facing a team of Sundowns' calibre remains a difficult challenge regardless of the competition they are participating in. The Brazilians have consistently demonstrated their ability to compete against strong opposition, making them a dangerous opponent in domestic fixtures.

Kanalelo's comments therefore reflect both the potential benefits of Sundowns' continental exit and the respect he continues to have for the club.

Although the Champions League disappointment may change Sundowns' priorities, Gallants cannot afford to underestimate them. Their quality and competitive experience mean they remain a serious threat to any opponent in the domestic league.
