South African football coach Rulani Mokwena has reportedly made an impressive start at Egyptian club Pyramids FC, with an 11-match winning streak placing him in the spotlight as the season progresses.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach is reported to have become the first manager in Pyramids’ history to win 11 consecutive competitive matches at the start of a season.
His latest reported victory came on Tuesday night, when Pyramids defeated Al Gaish 4-1 in the Egyptian Premier League, extending their winning run and strengthening their position near the top of the standings.
Mokwena, 39, took charge of the Egyptian club in July and has reportedly overseen a strong opening stretch across competitions. In the league, Pyramids are said to have collected 21 points from their first seven matches, putting them ahead of rivals Al Ahly and Zamalek, who reportedly had 16 points each at the time.
The winning streak is particularly notable when compared with previous starts by Pyramids coaches Hossam Hassan and Ramon Diaz. Hassan reportedly recorded six wins and five draws in his first 11 matches, while Diaz registered seven victories and four draws. Mokwena’s reported run stands out for its perfect winning record.
Before moving to Egypt, Mokwena established his reputation in South African football during his time at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he was associated with several major honours, including domestic league titles and the inaugural African Football League trophy.
He has also gained experience outside South Africa through spells with Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco, MC Alger in Algeria and Al-Ittihad in Libya.
His reported success at Pyramids has renewed interest among South African supporters eager to follow his progress abroad. The Egyptian club has ambitions of competing for major domestic and continental honours, placing expectations on the coaching staff to maintain consistent results.
However, sustaining a winning streak over an entire season presents a different challenge, particularly as fixtures become more demanding and opponents adapt tactically.
If the reported run continues, Mokwena could strengthen his standing in Egyptian football and add to his coaching achievements. The ultimate measure of his progress, however, will be whether Pyramids can convert their strong start into trophies.
Supporters will be watching closely as the season unfolds, with the club’s upcoming results set to show whether this promising run can develop into lasting success.
