Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has explained his decision to give Monnapule Saleng an opportunity to prove himself during their Carling Knockout Cup last-16 clash against Marumo Gallants.

The Portuguese tactician indicated that the decision was about more than simply giving the winger playing time. It was also an opportunity for Saleng to reflect on himself, improve his consistency and work towards meeting the team's expectations.

Cardoso explained that the club wanted the former Orlando Pirates star to use the opportunity to understand the areas of his game that required improvement while maintaining the right attitude during training.

"That's an opportunity we gave to Saleng, for him to go over on his thoughts, understand about himself, show consistency, train systematically in a good level, be aware of some of the things that were important to change," Cardoso said.

The coach's remarks suggest that Sundowns are focused on helping Saleng rediscover his best form through structured training, discipline and consistent performances.

Saleng's opportunity also places the spotlight on his potential contribution to the reigning South African champions as he seeks to establish himself within the squad.

For Cardoso, providing the winger with an opportunity is part of a broader process of assessing players and helping them understand what is required to succeed at a club with Sundowns' ambitions.

The challenge for Saleng will now be to turn the opportunity into consistent performances and demonstrate that he can make a meaningful contribution whenever called upon.

With competition for places remaining strong at Chloorkop, his response to the coach's expectations could prove important as Sundowns continue their campaign across domestic competitions.
