“Should Frosler Have Taken It?” — Doctor Khumalo Raises Big Questions After Chiefs’ CAF Exit

Doctor Khumalo Questions Frosler’s Penalty Decision! Kaizer Chiefs Legend Raises Concerns After CAF Heartbreak

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has raised questions about Reeve Frosler’s decision to take a penalty during Amakhosi’s dramatic CAF Confederation Cup exit, suggesting that leadership within the team could have played an important role in deciding who stepped forward.

The debate follows Chiefs’ second-leg clash against Zambian side Red Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday, where the Soweto giants won 1-0 to level the aggregate score at 1-1 before losing the penalty shootout.

After suffering a 1-0 defeat in the first leg in Ndola, Chiefs needed a response in front of their home supporters. Bradley Cross scored the decisive goal in regulation time to keep their qualification hopes alive, but the contest ultimately went to penalties.

The shootout proved painful for Amakhosi. Lebogang Maboe missed the opening spot-kick, while goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma saved Red Arrows’ first attempt. However, Chiefs were unable to capitalise on that opportunity, and Frosler’s missed penalty became one of the defining moments of their elimination.

Khumalo’s comments have now added another layer to the discussion, focusing not only on the missed kick but also on the responsibility of senior players to make important decisions under pressure.

Reflecting on the situation, Khumalo suggested that Frosler’s body language during the match raised concerns about whether he was the right player to take such a crucial penalty.

“I said his [Frosler's] body language was not a positive one, it was a little sluggish,” Khumalo said.

He then questioned whether Chiefs had enough leadership among the players to intervene when a teammate appeared not to be in the right condition to take responsibility.

“The question is, do we have leadership within the players, because they are certain players that can probably command to say, ‘No, sorry coach, I don't think so and so should take it’,” he explained.

His argument was not simply about blaming Frosler for missing the penalty. Instead, Khumalo raised a broader question about decision-making, confidence and the role experienced players should play when a team faces a decisive moment.

Khumalo also recalled an experience from his playing career involving the late Ace Ntsolengoe, explaining how a senior player once intervened to protect him after a difficult performance.

“It happened to me, when I was still playing. I had a bad game and the late Ace Ntsolengoe, the coach selected me and he said, ‘Coach, I don't think you need to give Doc a penalty because I don't think he had a good game, let's protect’,” he recalled.
