JUST IN: Kaizer Chiefs Secure Bafana Bafana Star Elias Mokwana as Da Cruz Strengthens His Attack
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 4 NOVEMBER 2026
Kaizer Chiefs have given their supporters a major reason to celebrate after officially announcing the signing of Bafana Bafana international Elias Mokwana as head coach Fernando Da Cruz continues to reinforce his squad ahead of the ongoing campaign.
The Soweto-based club confirmed on Wednesday that the 27-year-old winger has joined Amakhosi, ending months of uncertainty surrounding his future. Mokwana makes his return to South African football after spending the previous two seasons playing abroad.
His arrival is expected to strengthen the Chiefs attacking department as Da Cruz works towards building a more effective and unpredictable attacking unit.
Mokwana, who originates from KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, previously made a name for himself as one of the promising attacking talents in the Betway Premiership during his spell with Sekhukhune United.
His impressive displays attracted attention from several clubs before he completed a move to Tunisian powerhouse Espérance Sportive de Tunis in August 2024.
The Bafana Bafana winger enjoyed a productive spell in Tunisia, recording seven goals and four assists in 38 appearances across all competitions. He was also part of the team that won both the league title and domestic cup during the 2024/25 season.
Following his time in Tunisia, Mokwana moved to Saudi Arabia, joining Al-Hazem on loan for the 2025/26 campaign. He featured in 24 Saudi Pro League matches, gaining further experience in a different football environment.
However, his adventure abroad came to an end in September 2026 when he and Espérance mutually agreed to terminate their contract, leaving the South African international available as a free agent.
Kaizer Chiefs have now moved quickly to secure his services without having to pay a transfer fee.
For head coach Da Cruz, the signing represents a valuable addition to his attacking options. Mokwana's speed, dribbling skills, direct approach and ability to operate in different attacking positions could provide Chiefs with another weapon, particularly against opponents who defend deep.
The move also presents the winger with an opportunity to rebuild his international career by delivering consistent performances at Naturena.
Having already earned appearances for Bafana Bafana and represented the country at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Mokwana will be eager to remain part of the national team setup.
Chiefs supporters will be expecting him to bring the experience gained from his time in Tunisia and Saudi Arabia into the gold and black jersey.
With his arrival now confirmed, attention will shift towards how quickly he adapts to Da Cruz's playing philosophy and contributes to the club's ambitions for the season.
The latest signing sends a strong message that Amakhosi are determined to improve their attacking strength as they continue their pursuit of silverware.
