Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela has reportedly explained what led to his heated confrontation with Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi in Angola, with allegations of racial abuse, verbal insults and spitting emerging from his account.
The incident occurred after Sundowns played out a goalless draw against the Angolan club in the first leg of their CAF Champions League qualifying tie on Sunday, 18 October 2026. The confrontation attracted widespread attention, particularly after reports emerged that Bianchi had been taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Speaking on Marawa Sports Worldwide, sports broadcaster Robert Marawa said he had spoken to Komphela and shared the assistant coach's version of events. However, the allegations have not been independently verified, and the accounts of both parties remain important in establishing what happened.
According to Marawa, Komphela claimed that disrespect and alleged racism triggered his reaction. He reportedly said he understood the Portuguese insults allegedly directed at him and believed the exchange had crossed the line.
Marawa further reported that Komphela accused Bianchi of spitting at him, escalating an already tense situation. The Sundowns assistant coach was reportedly supervising additional training for players who needed more playing time when the confrontation unfolded near the tunnel.
Komphela allegedly acknowledged reacting angrily but maintained that he felt provoked and needed to defend himself. His account, however, does not independently establish the circumstances of the confrontation or justify physical aggression.
Meanwhile, Wiliete vice-president Vitorino Lunga Vicele condemned the alleged assault and indicated that the club was considering lodging complaints with CAF and Angolan authorities. He also reportedly confirmed that Bianchi had received medical attention and was recovering.
Reports suggested that Sundowns management had apologised to Wiliete, although details surrounding any formal complaint remained unclear.
The incident's full circumstances and any potential disciplinary action have yet to be conclusively established.
