Warren Gatland has backed South Africa’s Springboks to enter the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia as favourites, praising their strength, tactical quality and impressive record under coach Rassie Erasmus. However, the former Wales and British and Irish Lions coach has warned that injuries to key players could affect their chances of winning another title.
South Africa have established themselves as one of the strongest teams in international rugby after winning consecutive World Cups in 2019 and 2023. Their combination of physical power, attacking ability and experience makes them difficult opponents for any nation hoping to challenge for the trophy.
Gatland believes the Springboks have very few weaknesses and expects rival teams to work hard over the coming year to reduce the gap. He said: “I think they (South Africa) will be favourites (for the 2027 World Cup). It depends on whether you lose one or two key players picking up injuries. I think a lot of those teams in the next twelve months will be working exceptionally hard to bridge that gap with South Africa.”
He also highlighted the qualities that make the reigning champions such a formidable side, pointing to their powerful set piece, attacking flair, pace and physical presence. According to Gatland, opponents will need to produce a closely contested performance to stand a realistic chance of defeating them.
“If you’re going to beat South Africa, it’s probably going to be in an arm wrestle and it’s going to be a tight game,” he explained.
Despite his confidence in South Africa, Gatland acknowledged that several nations could challenge them in Australia. New Zealand, England and France remain serious contenders, while Argentina cannot be overlooked. He also noted improvements in Australian rugby, suggesting that the competition for the title could become more intense.
The possibility of a quarter-final meeting between South Africa and New Zealand has also attracted attention. Gatland believes teams must accept the tournament draw and concentrate on their performances rather than complain about potential match-ups.
Beyond the World Cup, Gatland has also identified South Africa as a leading contender for the inaugural Nations Championship. He believes New Zealand could challenge them for that title, but the Springboks remain difficult to dismiss.
Ultimately, South Africa’s success in 2027 may depend on maintaining their high standards, managing injuries and ensuring their key players remain available throughout the tournament
