Orlando Pirates legend Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi has stepped forward to defend winger Oswin Appollis, whose limited game time in recent weeks has sparked fan speculation over his future at the club. Now in his third season with the Buccaneers, the Bafana Bafana international has found himself on the sidelines more often than expected — a situation Vilakazi attributes to confidence rather than a drop in ability.

Speaking on the Omni Audio podcast, Vilakazi insisted Appollis remains a quality asset. “You can’t bring a good man down,” he said. “How possible is it that Oswin Appollis can become a bad player overnight? It can’t be — every time he gets an opportunity, he does well.” While acknowledging there may be friction between the player and coach Abdeslam Ouaddou or management, Vilakazi argued Appollis still has much to contribute whenever he takes the field.

He noted he had expected Appollis to feature in the Soweto Derby, suggesting Ouaddou might have been saving him for a later impact — a tactical approach he described as part of balancing a squad. Vilakazi also pointed to the scrutiny Appollis faced following the World Cup, where both his performances and Hugo Broos’ selection were questioned. In his view, the player needs time and backing to rebuild his confidence, and Ouaddou may be trying to shield him while clarifying his role within the team.

For Pirates supporters, the debate highlights the delicate balance between form, favour, and faith — and whether patience will be rewarded.
