JP Pietersen Backs Sharks Youngster Zekhethelo Siyaya After Springbok Selection Snub

Sharks head coach JP Pietersen has thrown his support behind promising fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya following his omission from the latest Springbok squad, encouraging the young player to remain focused, patient and ready for another opportunity to represent South Africa.

Siyaya has been attracting attention with his performances for the Sharks, raising expectations that he could earn national recognition as he continues to develop his game. However, his absence from the Springbok selection has been a disappointment for the youngster, particularly as he looks to establish himself among the country's top rugby talents.

Pietersen, who understands the demands of international rugby from his own playing career, has urged Siyaya not to allow the disappointment to affect his confidence or commitment.

The Sharks coach believes that missing out on selection should not be viewed as the end of the road. Instead, it should serve as motivation for the fullback to continue working hard, improving his performances and proving his quality whenever he gets an opportunity at club level.

The 19-year-old has already demonstrated considerable potential despite his limited experience at senior level. Pietersen acknowledged that Siyaya is still young and has plenty to learn, but praised the maturity and determination he has displayed whenever called upon.

“He’s been outstanding and is learning as he goes,” Pietersen said, highlighting the youngster's ability to handle pressure and compete for his place when given challenging assignments.

Siyaya's omission came after Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus announced his 37-man squad for the European leg of the Nations Championship. Several young players were included, but the Sharks fullback was among those who narrowly missed out.

Despite the disappointment, Pietersen believes the door remains open for Siyaya, particularly because injuries during international duty could create opportunities for additional players to join the national squad.

The Sharks coach has therefore encouraged him to stay prepared and continue demonstrating his abilities, stressing that he must be ready to answer the call whenever an opportunity presents itself.

Siyaya has already represented South Africa at junior level and featured for South Africa A, making him one of the exciting young prospects to watch in South African rugby.

Pietersen's backing represents an important vote of confidence in the teenager as he continues his development at the Sharks.

For now, Siyaya's immediate focus will be on delivering consistent performances for his club, with the coach confident that his hard work and progress could eventually earn him a place in the Springbok setup.

The message from Pietersen is clear: the Springbok dream is still alive, and Siyaya must remain ready when his opportunity arrives.
