AC Milan bombshell: gerry cardinale makes major statement on ruben amorim’s future

AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale has delivered a strong message about the future of head coach Rúben Amorim, making it clear that the Portuguese tactician has his full backing despite the pressure surrounding the club’s recent performances.

Cardinale has dismissed suggestions that Amorim could be facing an immediate exit, insisting that his position is not under threat and that he remains committed to the manager he personally selected to lead the Rossoneri.

The American businessman made his position clear during an interview with Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport on 30 October 2026, ahead of the highly anticipated Milan derby against Inter.

“I have full faith in him. At the end of Top Gun, my film, there’s a great line: ‘I’m not leaving my wingman.’ And I’m not leaving Ruben. He is not in danger at all. I will stay by his side,” Cardinale explained.

He also made it clear that he would not repeat what he considers mistakes made in previous years, particularly the frequent changes in the club’s coaching position.

“He is my manager and we will keep working together until we manage to make the step up. You can’t win if you keep switching from one manager to another. I chose Amorim,” he added.

The statement represents a significant show of confidence in Amorim, who began a new chapter at AC Milan after his departure from Manchester United.

His appointment was expected to bring a fresh tactical identity and renewed ambition to the Italian giants. However, building a successful team takes time, especially at a club where supporters demand consistent performances and major trophies.

Cardinale believes Amorim possesses the leadership qualities, football knowledge and mentality required to take Milan forward.

He also revealed that he had spoken extensively with the coach about the lessons learned from his difficult experience at Manchester United before deciding to appoint him.

According to Cardinale, Amorim demonstrated that he understood what had gone wrong during that period and had the right ideas to build a stronger football project at Milan.

Despite the challenges, Cardinale has not lowered his expectations. He believes Milan can compete for the Serie A title and has indicated that the club intends to strengthen its squad during the January transfer window.

The owner also acknowledged that the team needs greater cohesion and must improve its ability to rotate players while maintaining attacking quality and winning matches.

For him, draws are not enough when a club has ambitions of challenging for the biggest prizes.

The January transfer window could therefore become an important opportunity for Milan to address weaknesses and provide Amorim with additional options.

Cardinale’s public backing gives Amorim an important vote of confidence as he continues working to establish his ideas at San Siro.

However, support from the ownership will ultimately need to be matched by results on the pitch.
