WE ARE BACK: Sundowns Ladies Stun Cameroonian Giants in Thrilling CAF Champions League Showdown

Sundowns Ladies Silence Cameroonian Opposition to Secure First CAF Champions League Victory

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have finally secured their first victory in the 2026 CAF Women's Champions League after defeating Cameroonian outfit Lekié Football Filles 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Egypt.

The South African giants entered the encounter determined to bounce back following a disappointing goalless draw against Egyptian side FC Masar in their opening Group A fixture.

With their ambitions of reclaiming continental glory firmly in mind, the Brazilians knew that collecting maximum points against Lekié would be crucial to strengthening their chances of progressing to the semi-finals.

Tholakele Makes the Difference

Sundowns Ladies eventually found the breakthrough through forward Refilwe Tholakele, who scored in the 42nd minute to hand the South African champions a valuable advantage.

The goal came shortly before half-time, with Ronnel Donnelly providing the assist that allowed Tholakele to put her name on the scoresheet.

It was an important moment for the South Africans, who had struggled to convert their opportunities during their opening encounter against FC Masar.

This time, however, they demonstrated greater attacking efficiency, ensuring that their efforts were rewarded with a crucial goal.

Sundowns maintained their advantage as the contest progressed, with their experience and organisation proving important against a determined Cameroonian opponent.

Important Three Points for the Brazilians

The victory represents a significant boost for Sundowns Ladies as they continue their pursuit of another continental title.

The South African side are among the most successful teams in the history of the competition, having lifted the CAF Women's Champions League trophy in 2021 and 2023.

Their experience at this level makes them serious contenders, although the competition remains challenging, with several ambitious clubs fighting for continental honours.

The result also puts Sundowns in a stronger position in Group A after their opening-day stalemate.

Semi-Final Qualification Remains the Priority

The 2026 CAF Women's Champions League is being staged in Egypt from November 1 to 15, with eight clubs competing for the prestigious continental trophy.

Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals scheduled for November 11.

Sundowns will therefore be determined to maintain their momentum in their remaining group-stage fixtures.

Their next challenge will be against Moroccan outfit FUS Rabat on November 7.

For the Brazilians, Wednesday's victory is an important step towards achieving their ultimate objective: bringing the CAF Women's Champions League trophy back to South Africa.
