Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt has challenged Ashley du Preez and Njabulo Blom to prove themselves at the club, with the midfielder also being encouraged to work towards a possible return to the Bafana Bafana squad.
Du Preez returned to Stellenbosch during the recent transfer window after leaving Kaizer Chiefs, but he has struggled to secure regular playing time since rejoining the Cape Winelands side. According to iDiski Times, the forward had played just 118 minutes under Hunt and was yet to score or register an assist at the time of the report. iDiski Times +1
Hunt believes Du Preez needs the right tactical approach to bring out his strengths. The coach explained that the striker has a particular style of play that must be considered when selecting him for matches.
He also indicated that the 27-year-old was gradually settling in and showing signs of improvement after returning to familiar surroundings.
Hunt confirmed that Du Preez remains part of his plans, although the forward must take advantage of the opportunities that come his way.
Meanwhile, Blom is looking to rebuild his career after joining Stellenbosch on a season-long loan from Indonesian club Borneo Samarinda. The midfielder previously worked under Hunt at Kaizer Chiefs and made his Stellenbosch debut against his former side. Stellenbosch Football Club +1
Hunt praised Blom’s physical strength and midfield qualities, while acknowledging that regular game time would be important for his development.
The coach also raised the possibility of the midfielder returning to the national team, reminding him that he had previously been part of the Bafana Bafana setup.
“I said to him if you look at the Bafana side, you were there at the stage. If he gets a few games on his belt, who knows get back in the squad, so it’s up him.”
Hunt believes both players have opportunities to improve their situations, but says their progress ultimately depends on their performances and consistency.
