Mamelodi Sundowns Reportedly Ready to Give Miguel Cardoso More Time After Champions League Exit

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly prepared to give head coach Miguel Cardoso more time to address the team’s challenges following their disappointing exit from the CAF Champions League, despite growing pressure surrounding his position at the club.

The Brazilians’ continental setback has raised questions about their performances and ability to compete consistently at the highest level of African football. However, reports suggest that the club’s management are not planning to make an immediate decision on Cardoso’s future, preferring to allow the Portuguese tactician an opportunity to turn things around.

Cardoso took charge of Sundowns in December 2024 and inherited a team accustomed to domestic success and strong performances in continental competitions. Since then, expectations have remained high, with supporters demanding consistent results in the Betway Premiership and progress in the CAF Champions League.

Sundowns have invested significantly in assembling a competitive squad filled with talented players, placing considerable responsibility on the coaching staff to deliver results. Their latest continental disappointment has therefore intensified scrutiny of Cardoso’s leadership and tactical approach.

Despite the criticism, the reported willingness to exercise patience suggests that Sundowns could prioritise stability rather than rush into another coaching decision. The management may want to assess the team’s performances over the coming matches before determining whether significant changes are necessary.

Cardoso will now face the challenge of restoring confidence within the squad, improving consistency and ensuring that Sundowns remain competitive in domestic competitions. His ability to respond positively to the setback could play an important role in determining how the club evaluates his progress.

For Sundowns, the immediate priority will be to move forward and maintain their position among South Africa’s leading clubs.

However, the club has not officially confirmed any decision regarding Cardoso’s future. The reports suggesting that he will be given more time should therefore be treated cautiously until an official statement is released.
