Naturana Rejected Him: Former Chiefs Defender Breaks Silence After Scoring Historic League Goal

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy has insisted that the pressure and atmosphere of the UEFA Champions League do not intimidate him, explaining that he is already accustomed to playing in front of massive crowds.

The 22-year-old South African centre-back has made an impressive start to his career with Azerbaijani club Sabah FK after leaving Kaizer Chiefs. He has quickly become an important member of the team and is already gaining valuable experience on the European stage.

McCarthy demonstrated his confidence during Sabah FK’s UEFA Champions League clash against German giants Borussia Dortmund at the Baku Olympic Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Despite facing an experienced opponent in a high-pressure encounter, the young defender remained composed and produced an encouraging individual performance. He also scored his first Champions League goal, marking a significant milestone in his career abroad.

Although Sabah suffered a 2-1 defeat, with Serhou Guirassy scoring twice for Dortmund, McCarthy’s display showed that he could compete against some of Europe’s top players.

Speaking about the atmosphere surrounding the competition, McCarthy explained that the occasion did not overwhelm him. He pointed out that he had previously played in stadiums capable of accommodating around 100,000 spectators, meaning the large crowds were not entirely unfamiliar to him.

His comments reflect the confidence and composure he has brought into European football. For the young defender, the priority is to remain focused on his responsibilities on the pitch rather than being distracted by the occasion or the reputation of his opponents.

McCarthy’s progress is encouraging for South African football, particularly given how quickly he appears to have adapted to a new country and a different level of competition.

After developing his career at Kaizer Chiefs, he joined Sabah FK ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, beginning a new chapter that has already given him the opportunity to face some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

His performances in the Champions League could also help attract the attention of Bafana Bafana selectors as South Africa continues to assess its defensive options. However, maintaining consistent performances will be crucial if he hopes to establish himself at the highest level.

Following the defeat to Dortmund, Sabah will be looking to respond collectively, while McCarthy will aim to build on his encouraging display and continue improving his reputation in European football.

Scoring against a club of Dortmund’s stature and expressing confidence in the face of Champions League pressure have already given South African supporters reasons to follow his progress closely.

For a player who recently left domestic football, featuring in Europe’s premier club competition represents a major step forward. McCarthy will now be hoping to maintain his momentum and continue making an impact with Sabah FK.
