Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner has offered insight into the problems Amakhosi faced during their 1-0 defeat to Zambian side Red Arrows in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round.
The defeat left the Soweto giants needing a strong response in the return fixture as they look to keep their hopes of progressing in the competition alive. Chiefs went into the first leg determined to secure a positive result, but they were unable to find the back of the net and eventually suffered a narrow loss.
Red Arrows took advantage of their opportunity to score, leaving Chiefs with work to do ahead of the second leg. The result has increased the pressure on the South African side, who must now find a way to overcome the deficit if they are to advance to the next round.
Leaner’s comments have provided an opportunity to reflect on what went wrong for Amakhosi. While a 1-0 defeat may appear manageable, it highlights the importance of taking chances and maintaining concentration throughout a match, particularly in continental competitions where small mistakes can have significant consequences.
For Chiefs, one of the biggest challenges will be improving their attacking performance. Scoring goals is essential when a team needs to overturn a first-leg deficit, and the players will have to make better use of their opportunities in the return fixture.
The team must also remain organised defensively. Although Chiefs conceded only once, allowing the opposition to score without finding an equaliser put them in a difficult position. A more balanced performance will be necessary if they are to produce the result their supporters want.
The second leg will therefore demand greater urgency, discipline and teamwork from the players. Chiefs cannot afford to become impatient in their search for a goal, as losing their defensive shape could give Red Arrows further opportunities to threaten.
Leaner and his teammates will also be aware of the importance of managing the pressure. Playing in a continental competition brings expectations, especially for a club with the history and following of Kaizer Chiefs. However, the team must focus on the task in front of them rather than allow the first-leg result to affect their confidence.
The narrow scoreline means the tie remains within reach, but Chiefs must demonstrate their quality on the pitch. Their ability to convert chances and avoid costly mistakes could determine whether they continue their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
With the return fixture approaching, Amakhosi have an opportunity to respond to the setback and show that they can compete effectively at continental level. A determined performance will be essential if they are to turn the situation around and secure qualification for the next round.
