Kaizer Chiefs returned to winning ways in impressive fashion after defeating TS Galaxy 3-0 in their Carling Knockout Last 16 encounter at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening. The victory was particularly significant for Amakhosi, who had been searching for a positive result to restore confidence and maintain momentum in their campaign.
The standout performer was Wandile Duba, who delivered a sensational display by scoring all three goals to complete a memorable hat-trick. His clinical finishing proved decisive as Chiefs overcame a challenging opponent and secured their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.
For the Soweto giants, the result represented more than simply progressing to the next round. It offered an important opportunity to regain belief after a difficult spell and demonstrate their ability to respond when the pressure was on.
Chiefs entered the contest knowing that a strong performance was necessary to keep their Carling Knockout ambitions alive. With supporters expecting an improved display, the team needed to show greater attacking purpose, discipline and determination against a TS Galaxy side that could not be underestimated.
Duba answered that challenge emphatically, taking centre stage with a performance that highlighted his attacking instincts and ability to make a difference in front of goal.
The breakthrough arrived shortly after the interval when Duba opened the scoring in the 48th minute. The forward finished off a delivery from Pule Mmodi, giving Chiefs the advantage and immediately changing the atmosphere inside the stadium.
With the opening goal behind them, Amakhosi began to play with greater confidence and attacking purpose. Their movement in the final third improved, while TS Galaxy struggled to contain the growing threat posed by the home side.
Chiefs doubled their advantage in the 62nd minute after Mfundo Vilakazi's penalty struck the post. Duba reacted quickest to the rebound and fired the ball into the net to complete his brace.
Just four minutes later, the striker completed his hat-trick in spectacular fashion. Duba beat the offside trap to run onto a through-ball from Mduduzi Shabalala before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Melusi Mathebula. The goal sealed a convincing 3-0 victory and capped an outstanding individual performance.
The result will provide considerable relief for head coach Fernando da Cruz, who has faced pressure following the club's recent struggles. Chiefs were previously eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup after losing to Zambian side Red Arrows on penalties.
However, Tuesday's performance offered a timely response and gave the team something positive to build on. Progressing to the quarter-finals keeps their hopes of winning silverware alive, while Duba's clinical display could strengthen his case for a more prominent role in the attack.
The victory also arrives at an important moment in the season, with the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates scheduled for Saturday. Chiefs will approach that high-profile encounter with renewed confidence after scoring three goals without conceding.
For Duba, the evening could prove particularly memorable. His hat-trick helped Amakhosi advance and gave supporters a performance to celebrate after recent disappointments. Chiefs will now aim to carry this momentum into their next fixture as they continue their pursuit of Carling Knockout glory.
