Manqoba Mngqithi, who formerly coached Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows, has led Tanzanian powerhouses Young Africans to yet another triumph, this time reaching the CAF Champions League group stages.
With an eye toward helping Yanga contend for domestic and continental accolades, Mngqithi joined the club, and he has gotten off to a good start. In his first season with the club, the South African strategist won the Community Shield; now, he may add qualifying for the Champions League to his list of accomplishments.
On Wednesday, in the second leg of their second preliminary round encounter, Young Africans defeated Madagascar team CFFA 4-1 to seal their spot in the group rounds. This solidified Yanga's place in Africa's premier club championship, as they won the match 8-1 on aggregate.
With confidence high after their first-leg victory, the Tanzanian team proceeded to display their offensive prowess in front of their home fans.
In the 27th minute, Young Africans took the lead thanks to an own goal by Ibrahim Kazimoto. The home team took command of the contest after scoring and were determined to go to the next round.
With a goal by Selemani Mwalimu in the 49th minute, Yanga extended their lead soon after the interval. A swift brace from the striker put the game out of CFFA's grasp, and he scored again in the 53rd minute.
Despite a consolation goal for the visitors in the 75th minute, Young Africans persisted in their pursuit of a second goal. The home team's outstanding effort was capped off with a goal scored by teenager Juma Issa Abushuri in the 82nd minute.
Due to the scheduling of their second leg encounter before the other matches in the preliminary round, Young Africans were the first team to qualify for the group stages of the CAF Champions League this season with their win.
This success gives Mngqithi hope as he begins a new endeavour outside of South Africa. Before leading the Tanzanian powerhouses, he had extensive experience in South African football with Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows.
Yanga may find his background useful as they get ready for the group stage's more difficult obstacles. Their consistency and tactical preparedness will be put to the test as they face off against some of the best clubs in Africa.
Mngqithi will be looking to keep his Young Africans on track for a successful Champions League campaign after they won the Community Shield and qualified for the continental tournament.
The former Sundowns coach is continuing his work in Tanzania with the goal of assembling a strong team that can contend for more trophies.
