Soweto Derby Scandal Deepens: What Hlungwani Revealed About Appollis' Disallowed Goal

Former South African referee Victor Hlungwani has weighed in on the controversial disallowed Orlando Pirates goal against Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby, offering an explanation that could reignite debate among supporters of both clubs.

The highly anticipated encounter took place at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October 2026, with Orlando Pirates securing a 2-1 victory over their bitter rivals. However, the result was accompanied by several contentious moments, including the decision to rule out a goal involving Pirates attacker Oswin Appollis.

Hlungwani, who is well known for analysing refereeing decisions and interpreting the Laws of the Game, believes the Pirates goal should have been allowed to stand. His assessment focuses on the positioning of Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika, whom he believes played a crucial role in keeping Appollis onside during the attacking move.

"We have Kwinika there putting Appollis onside. So this goal was scored in line with the FIFA laws of the game. A goal should have been allowed," Hlungwani explained.

The former referee's comments have added another dimension to the controversy, particularly among Pirates supporters who believe their team may have been unfairly denied an opportunity to extend their advantage.

According to the Laws of the Game, an attacker is judged on their position when a teammate plays or touches the ball. The positions of opposing players must also be considered when determining whether an offside offence has occurred.

Hlungwani's interpretation suggests that Kwinika's positioning meant Appollis was legally positioned during the attacking phase.

Pirates eventually claimed all three points through goals from Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi, while Pule Mmodi scored Chiefs' only goal.

Although the result remains unchanged, Hlungwani's verdict has renewed questions about the officiating and whether Pirates were denied a legitimate goal in one of the biggest matches on the South African football calendar.
