Chiefs Legend Names Two Players He Blames for Amakhosi’s CAF Exit

Kaizer Chiefs legend Zebulon Nhlapo has raised concerns about the confidence of Mduduzi Shabalala and Asanele Velebayi following Amakhosi’s painful exit from the CAF Confederation Cup. The two attackers struggled to convert important chances as the Soweto giants suffered a penalty shootout defeat against Zambia’s Red Arrows.

Kaizer Chiefs entered the second leg at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Friday, 23 October, needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first encounter. Amakhosi managed to secure a 1-0 victory in regulation time, with Bradley Cross scoring in the 66th minute. However, the aggregate score remained level at 1-1, forcing the tie into a penalty shootout, where Chiefs ultimately lost 3-2.

Nhlapo Points to a Lack of Confidence

According to the comments attributed to Nhlapo, a lack of confidence could be affecting the attackers’ performances in front of goal.

The former Chiefs player believes that the team’s struggles go beyond simply missing opportunities. Confidence can influence decision-making, composure and the ability to deliver when the pressure is at its highest.

For a club with the expectations and history of Kaizer Chiefs, failing to convert clear chances in an important continental fixture is a concern that cannot be ignored.

Shabalala and Velebayi Miss Crucial Opportunities

Mduduzi Shabalala had two promising opportunities to extend Chiefs’ lead after Cross’s equaliser. In the 79th minute, he sent his effort over the crossbar following a dangerous run by substitute Mfundo Vilakazi.

Five minutes later, Ethan Chislett played Shabalala through on goal, but his attempt was directed straight at Red Arrows goalkeeper Charles Kalumba, who made the save.

Asanele Velebayi also missed an opportunity late in the match, leaving Chiefs unable to find the additional goal that could have strengthened their position before the shootout.

These missed chances proved costly as Amakhosi’s hopes of reaching the Confederation Cup group stages came to an end.

What Happens Next for Amakhosi?

The continental disappointment means Chiefs must now redirect their attention towards their remaining domestic fixtures, including the Carling Knockout competition.

Shabalala and Velebayi will have an opportunity to respond on the pitch, while the coaching staff will need to help the attackers regain their confidence and improve their finishing.

Chiefs have demonstrated that they can create scoring opportunities, but converting those chances consistently remains essential if they want to compete for silverware.

Do you think Mduduzi Shabalala and Asanele Velebayi need more time to regain their confidence, or should Kaizer Chiefs consider changes to their attacking options? Share your thoughts.
