Kaizer Chiefs captain and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has opened up about the emotional challenges of facing intense criticism from supporters as he prepares for the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates.
Petersen has endured a difficult period after coming under heavy scrutiny following several costly mistakes during the early stages of the season. His performances attracted criticism from sections of the Amakhosi faithful, with some supporters resorting to cruel insults and nicknames, including calling him an "open net".
The goalkeeper admitted that the constant negative comments have been painful, particularly because they have continued to follow him on a daily basis. However, he remains determined to overcome the difficult period and prove his worth to the club. Petersen explained that he continues to work hard in training to improve his performances and return to the level expected of him.
The 31-year-old has also highlighted the importance of self-belief and having people around him who provide encouragement during challenging moments. Despite the hostility from some supporters, he believes that criticism does not determine his ability as a footballer or his value as an individual.
Petersen recently made his return from injury and delivered an encouraging performance in Kaizer Chiefs' impressive 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup. His comeback was an important boost for the Soweto giants, especially with several crucial fixtures approaching.
Attention has now shifted towards the Soweto Derby, where Chiefs will face their fierce rivals Orlando Pirates in one of the biggest matches on the South African football calendar.
Petersen believes he is ready to take responsibility if selected to start, although he acknowledged that the final decision rests with the head coach. He also suggested that supporters who disagree with tactical decisions should direct their concerns towards the club's management.
The derby presents Petersen with an opportunity to rebuild his relationship with the supporters through a strong performance. With expectations extremely high, the Chiefs captain will be hoping to turn the criticism into motivation and demonstrate why he remains an important figure at Naturena.
