Inacio Miguel Defends Kaizer Chiefs Teammates After Red Arrows Brawl
Kaizer Chiefs captain Inacio Miguel has defended teammates Reeve Frosler and Renaldo Leaner following their heated confrontation after the club’s defeat to Red Arrows in Zambia, insisting that the incident reflected frustration and a desire to improve rather than serious divisions within the squad.
The altercation attracted widespread attention after photographs of the two players arguing circulated on social media following Chiefs’ 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round tie. The incident raised concerns among supporters about possible tension in the dressing room.
However, Miguel offered a different explanation, suggesting that the players’ reactions were driven by disappointment over the result and their determination to perform better. The Angolan defender acknowledged that emotions can run high when expectations are not met, particularly in important continental fixtures.
Miguel also urged his teammates to demonstrate greater courage, determination and fighting spirit as they attempt to overcome their challenges on the pitch. He suggested that the intensity displayed by Frosler and Leaner could be channelled positively if the squad focused that energy on improving its performances.
The captain further indicated that the footage circulating online had exaggerated the seriousness of the confrontation. Head coach Fernando Da Cruz also played down the incident, suggesting that it did not require outside intervention.
Despite the efforts to calm concerns, Chiefs ultimately failed to progress in the competition. Amakhosi defeated Red Arrows 1-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday, October 23, with Bradley Cross scoring the decisive goal. The victory levelled the aggregate score at 1-1 after the Zambian side had won the first leg.
Chiefs subsequently suffered elimination following a penalty shootout, dealing another setback to their continental ambitions.
With their CAF Confederation Cup campaign over, attention now shifts to domestic competitions. Miguel’s message is clear: Chiefs must turn their frustration into determination, deliver consistent performances and restore supporters’ confidence as the season continues.
