Golden Arrows delivered a dominant performance to defeat Chippa United 4-0 and secure their place in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals.
Abafana Bes’thende were in impressive form throughout the encounter, with Junior Dion, Sabelo Sithole, Nhlanhla Zwane and Jerome Karelse all finding the back of the net to complete a convincing victory.
The result highlighted Golden Arrows’ attacking strength as they took advantage of their opportunities and put Chippa United under sustained pressure. Scoring four goals without conceding also demonstrated their effectiveness at both ends of the pitch.
Junior Dion opened the scoring in the 11th minute, rising highest to head home from a corner and give the Durban-based side an early advantage. The goal provided Arrows with the perfect start as they looked to take control of the knockout encounter.
The hosts doubled their lead in the 22nd minute through Sabelo Sithole. Dion turned provider during a counter-attack, setting up Sithole, who calmly finished to put Arrows firmly in command before half-time.
Chippa United struggled to respond, finding it difficult to create clear scoring opportunities against an organised Arrows defence. Although the visitors attempted to find a way back into the contest after the break, they could not break through.
Golden Arrows remained dangerous going forward and eventually extended their advantage in the closing stages. Substitute Nhlanhla Zwane scored in the 83rd minute before Jerome Karelse added another two minutes later, completing the emphatic victory.
The result was an encouraging start for newly appointed head coach Mandla Ncikazi, who watched the match from the stands as he began his third spell in charge of the club. Arrows became the first team to secure qualification for the Carling Knockout quarter-finals.
The convincing performance will give Abafana Bes’thende confidence heading into the next round, where they will hope to continue their cup run. For Chippa United, the heavy defeat means their hopes of lifting the trophy have ended, leaving them to turn their attention back to their league campaign.
