South African football coach Kwanele Kopo has shared details of how he persuaded Ronwen Williams to reconsider his decision to leave football following the heartbreaking death of his brother. The experienced coach explained that the tragedy deeply affected the goalkeeper, who struggled emotionally and eventually lost the desire to continue his career.
Speaking during the 127th episode of the Arena Sports Show on YouTube, hosted by Mahlatse Mphahlele, Kopo reflected on the difficult period in Williams’ life and revealed the steps he took to encourage the young goalkeeper to return to the game.
“Ronwen quit football after his brother passed on,” Kopo said.
Kopo explained that the news of Williams’ brother’s death reached him while they were travelling to Cape Town for the Bayhill Tournament. The unexpected loss forced the team to make immediate arrangements to support the grieving goalkeeper during a painful period.
“We were on our way to the Bayhill Tournament in Cape Town and I received a call that his brother had passed away.
“We flew him to Gqeberha \[Port Elizabeth\] and gave him a month off, but he didn’t come back. I got on the phone and begged him to come back \[and play\].
“I told him you are destined to play for Bafana Bafana, and also spoke to his mother.”
Despite giving Williams time to recover, Kopo realised that returning to football would require more than simply allowing him to rest. The coach therefore appealed to the goalkeeper’s ambitions and reminded him of the importance of continuing his journey in honour of his late brother.
Kopo believes that message ultimately helped Williams change his mind and rediscover his commitment to the sport.
“I think what convinced him to come back was when I told him he must come back to honour his brother because he would never have wanted to see him stop playing football,” Kopo added.
Williams eventually returned to football and developed into one of South Africa’s most respected goalkeepers. He now captains both Mamelodi Sundowns and the national team, Bafana Bafana, earning recognition for his performances at club and international level.
Reflecting on the goalkeeper’s achievements, Kopo expressed gratitude for having played a role in his development and career revival.
“He is South Africa’s, and probably Africa’s, number one goalkeeper. I am humbled to have had the opportunity to work with these players.”
