Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi has revealed how his team managed to frustrate Mamelodi Sundowns in their CAF Champions League second qualifying round first-leg encounter in Angola.
The Angolan side held the reigning CAF Champions League holders to a goalless draw, putting up a determined performance to prevent the South African giants from taking an advantage into the return leg.
Sundowns entered the contest as one of the favourites, given their experience and quality in continental football. However, Wiliete demonstrated their ability to compete against a more established opponent by limiting the visitors’ opportunities to find the back of the net.
Bianchi’s tactical approach played an important role in the outcome, as Wiliete focused on making life difficult for Sundowns throughout the encounter. The home side remained organised and disciplined, ensuring that the visitors could not easily turn their possession and attacking quality into goals.
For Wiliete, keeping Sundowns scoreless was a significant achievement against a team that has consistently competed at the highest level of African club football. The result also demonstrated the importance of defensive organisation and tactical preparation when facing opponents with greater continental experience.
Sundowns, meanwhile, were unable to secure an away victory despite their status as defending champions. The goalless result means they will have to find a way past Wiliete in the second leg if they are to progress to the next stage of the competition.
The result leaves the tie finely balanced, with neither side holding an advantage on the scoreboard. Both teams will have another opportunity to settle the contest when they meet again in the return fixture.
Wiliete will be encouraged by their defensive performance in Angola and will hope to build on it in the next meeting. Sundowns, on the other hand, will need to improve their attacking effectiveness and take advantage of their opportunities to avoid an early setback in their continental campaign.
Bianchi’s comments have drawn attention to the tactical work behind Wiliete’s performance, with the Angolan club showing that disciplined defending can make even the continent’s leading teams work hard for a result.
