Sharks head coach JP Pietersen has thrown his support behind promising young fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya following his omission from the latest Springbok squad, urging the teenager to remain focused and prepared for an opportunity to represent South Africa.
The 19-year-old has impressed with his performances for the Durban-based franchise, attracting attention for his attacking ability, confidence and potential. However, despite his encouraging progress, Siyaya was not included in Rassie Erasmus' 37-man Springbok squad for the European leg of the Nations Championship.
His omission is understood to have been disappointing, particularly as several young players were handed opportunities to join the national setup.
Pietersen, however, believes the youngster should not allow the setback to affect his confidence, insisting that he still has an important role to play at the Sharks while continuing to develop his game.
The former Springbok winger praised Siyaya's progress, highlighting his ability to handle difficult situations despite his limited experience at senior level.
"He's been outstanding and is learning along the way. It's good to see that when you throw him in the deep end, he's capable of swimming and fighting for it," Pietersen said.
The Sharks coach also reminded the teenager that opportunities in international rugby can emerge unexpectedly, particularly when injuries affect players during national team duty.
He therefore encouraged Siyaya to remain ready for a possible call-up rather than become discouraged by his omission.
"He must stay loaded because you never know what happens with injuries on international duty and an opportunity could come his way," Pietersen explained.
Pietersen also believes the disappointment should motivate the young fullback to work harder and demonstrate that he deserves consideration for future Springbok selections.
Siyaya has already made significant progress in his rugby career. He represented South Africa at schoolboy level before earning opportunities with the Junior Springboks and South Africa A.
His performances have strengthened his reputation as one of the exciting young prospects in South African rugby.
The Sharks will now look to benefit from his abilities as they continue their United Rugby Championship campaign, with Pietersen keen to see him maintain his development and consistency.
For Siyaya, the immediate challenge is to continue producing impressive performances at club level while keeping his international ambitions alive.
Although missing out on the latest Springbok selection represents a setback, Pietersen's message is clear: the opportunity could still come, and the youngster must be ready to take it.
