RIP| Kaizer Chiefs Legend Has Reportedly Passed Away at 80, See Who He is That Got Club Mourning

South African football powerhouse Kaizer Chiefs joined the continental sports community in mourning the death of Zambian football legend Freddy Mwila, who passed away in 2026 at the age of 80. The Soweto-based club expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the former international player, acknowledging his lasting influence on African sports and his foundational role in Zambia’s rich footballing history.

Mwila shared a historic connection with Kaizer Chiefs founder and chairman, Dr. Kaizer Motaung. Long before the founding of the South African club, the two men lined up together in the United States as teammates for the Atlanta Chiefs in the North American Soccer League. Their partnership reached its peak in 1968, when they led the Atlanta franchise to a championship title. That victory laid the groundwork for Motaung’s later vision when he returned to South Africa to establish Kaizer Chiefs, naming the new club partly in honor of his former American team.

Because of this shared history, Mwila’s passing represents a profound moment for Kaizer Chiefs. His career was deeply interwoven with the personal journey of the club’s chairman and the origin story of one of Africa’s most recognizable sporting brands. In its official tribute, the club emphasized that the championship bond forged between Mwila and Motaung in 1968 remains permanently etched into the historical identity of the Soweto giants.

Beyond his international success, Mwila belonged to a pioneering generation of Zambian footballers who helped build their country's standing as a major force on the African continent. His transition from an accomplished player to a respected figure in regional sports served as a bridge between early African football history and modern professional leagues.

Sending condolences to Mwila’s family, friends, and the broader Zambian football community, Kaizer Chiefs recognized that while his passing marks the end of a historic era, his achievements and contributions to international football will continue to inspire young athletes across the continent for generations to come.
