HOW SHE WAS FIRED FROM HER JOB

While still working at a butchery in Lansdowne, Ellis discovered another women's club, Spurs Ladies. She once left town with the club for the weekend, promising her employers that she'd be back in time for work, but the car the team was traveling in broke down on the way home, causing her to be late. As a result, Ellis was fired.

Throughout her playing career, Ellis held a variety of administrative positions. She served as vice-president of the Western Province Women's Football Association from 1994 to 1995, and then as PRO from 1996 to 1997. In 2001, she worked as the Chief Librarian at Touchline, a photo agency.

COACHING CAREER

In 2016, Ellis was appointed temporary manager of South Africa's women's national football team after Vera Pauw quit following the squad's group stage exit from the 2016 Olympics. Ellis was appointed head coach in February 2018 and led the team, which was ranked 50th in the world at the time, to a second-place finish in the Africa Women Cup of Nations, losing on penalty kicks to 11-time champions Nigeria in the final; however, by finishing second, South Africa qualified for its first-ever FIFA Women's World Cup in 2019.

In 2018, 2019, and 2022, she was named Confederation of African Football Women's Coach of the Year.

Ellis led Banyana Banyana to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco in 2022.
