The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has thrown its weight behind the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in South African football, with chairman Dr Irvin Khoza making the league's position clear.
Khoza confirmed that the PSL is fully in favour of introducing the technology, which is designed to assist match officials in reviewing crucial decisions and reducing refereeing errors.
Speaking on the matter, the PSL chairman did not hide the league's intentions, stating:
“We are supporting it. We want it at all costs.”
Khoza further revealed that discussions about bringing VAR to South African football date back to 2009, highlighting that the idea has been on the league's agenda for several years.
However, the process now requires further attention from the South African Football Association (SAFA), which is currently reviewing the necessary steps towards its possible implementation.
The potential introduction of VAR comes amid continued debates surrounding refereeing decisions in the PSL, with several incidents sparking discussions among supporters, players and football stakeholders.
While the league has made its support clear, the focus now shifts to SAFA and the next steps required to make VAR a reality in South African football.
